Saving Update: Working the Public Holidays and Spending to Reward Yourself!

As promised, here is my latest Savings Update! Hope you savers have been doing well!

Since mid-February, I have been trying to save a minimum of $4000 for my Korean holiday! I have great news! I have just hit the $1k mark with ten months more to go until holiday time! Seoul, I can almost smell you!

No more trying to hitch rides to Korea!

So what have I been doing to save up, exactly?

Well, the Easter Holidays have just past and everyone had the opportunity to get away from school and work, and just have some family bonding time.

….Almost everyone.

I worked during Easter Sunday so I could get holiday penalty rates of time and a half. I find that if you don’t have anything planned for a public holiday anyway, why not just work? Make a quick buck. I made sure I still had the time to spend with my family because of course, family matters. So instead of celebrating on Easter Sunday, we had dinner on Easter Monday instead with our extended family.

Since reaching the $1000 mark, I thought I’d reward myself a little bit. I think I’ll be doing that now every time I reach a certain threshold! I don’t want to be too much of a tightass! You’ve still got to have fun and reward yourself a little every time you achieve something worthwhile! Before I started rewarding myself though, I made sure to transfer a percentage of my earnings into my Netbank saver account so I won’t be tempted to spend it!

So my mates and I went out last night for dinner at Alrose Garden in Strathfield for some hearty traditional Korean dishes. Apparently the spicy food there is really, really hot so I took the coward’s way out and just ordered a Chicken Schnitzel instead. I didn’t get to take a picture but their servings are MASSIVE! My Schnitzel didn’t even fit on the plate!

All in all, the prices were really good in relation to how big their dishes are. The ambience was great, too, and they played K-Pop which was cool. 🙂

To continue on with the theme of big things, we went to Noggi afterwards to drown ourselves in their Frozen yogurt. We ordered the Groupi which is their largest serving and we demolished it in no time! Omnomnom!

This is the Maxi... not as big as the Groupi.

Also, we went to China Town Friday Night Markets in the city. I bought some dragon beard candy and I was going to buy 4 Minute’s new mini-album Volume Up but I found that the internet sells it for much cheaper! So online shopping it is!

I won’t drag on any longer, but I wish you guys the best in saving! And just remember to live a little, and spend a little to reward yourself every once in awhile!

Good luck!

안녕~!

Saving Update: Saving on the side

Being a full-time musician and student makes it a great deal harder to save up for anything. I get the occasional gig here and there but as many of you know, unless you’re a worldwide superstar, being a musician doesn’t pay greatly. But don’t get me wrong! I absolutely love what I do and I wouldn’t have it any other way however it becomes a great dilemma when you’re trying to save up for Korea!

Performing with my band "Enter the Ninja"

So how can I save any other way?

Obviously, there’s having a job which would be my number one option. I quit my job last year once I became a full time student and since then my bank account gradually became emptier and emptier. Being a student isn’t cheap. Every week my public transport expenses costs me $30, I have to spend for food if I don’t want to starve myself, plus there are tuition fees. As I mentioned in my 10 Ways to Save For Korea post, I’ve begun packing lunches for uni but occasionally I do want to eat some nice hot food and sometimes my packed lunch just isn’t enough. Either way, if I’m packing lunches or buying at uni, I’m still spending none-the-less.

Anyway, I’ve applied for a few jobs and I have an interview on Thursday! (Woo!) I’ll just have to deal with being an employed full-time student somehow.

Regardless of what I’ve mentioned above, here are some things I’ve been doing to help fill up my piggy!

  1. Busking

Yesterday I went busking for the first time with Frances! We used this opportunity as a paid rehearsal before a gig we had afterwards. It was daunting at first singing in public in front of strangers but then, think about it. As a musician, I sing in front of strangers all the time. Most people loved it, and we even had a little audience by the end of it all. It was great! And to be honest, the income was fantastic. I made more money busking than playing actual gigs. The money you pay for a busking license is pretty much remitted back to you on your first busk.I think I’ll be busking more often.  Yep, definitely.
  2. Giving Lessons
We’re all particularly good at something and there are always people wanting to get better at that something you do. I’m a singer so recently I decided I’d give some singing lessons to beginners for heaps cheap. And when I say cheap, I mean cheap. You get more business that way.
  3. Gigs

One day I'll have my own Big Show

My band Enter the Ninja and I have been gigging around Sydney since late 2010. However, until the day we get as big as Big Bang, originals bands just don’t earn nearly enough but it is a great way to save on the side. Fighting~!

Anyway, Piggy is getting fatter and fatter! I’ve just got to keep finding ways to feed her!

Feed me~!

Major setback

Bring the boys out!

So unfortunately my keyboard decided to die this afternoon. As I’ve mentioned before, I am a music student so having a keyboard is vital to my education. Because of this, I had to dig out some $$$ from my Korea Kitty to buy a new keyboard ASAP.

This sucks terribly because it has placed a massive dent in my savings.

But in other news, I have applied for a job to help speed savings up a bit faster so hopefully I get hired so I can check-out chick my way into Korea.

Fighting~!

(Also, the song I was charting out when my old Casio died was The Boys by Girls’  Generation. Ha! I just thought you should know!)

My piggy bank got an upgrade! She’s actually a piggy now, and she’s huge! YAY! More space for saving for Korea!

Oink~!

Meet Piggy! (Moomoo will be moving to my bedroom to adorn my bookcase and to be the holder of smaller change I find lying around.)
